A few facts about aggressive dogs include:

are family pets.
2)
60 to 70% of dog bites are to children and the elderly
3)
40% of dog bites to children result in permanent facial damage to the lips, cheek,
etc.
4)
50% of the claims made on homeowners insurance are dog bite claims
5)
More dog bites come from smaller dogs versus larger dogs.
What Makes A Dog Aggressive?
Dogs can become aggressive due to:
1)
Lack of Obedience Training. This training emphasizes the pack order. The master is
number one and the dog is number two. The dog learns to take orders from the master.
2)
Isolated Dogs. The dogs have little or no contact with people. When they see something
different, the dogs become aggressive. As a puppy, have your dogs socialize with other dogs and with your
friends and family.
3)
Fear Based Aggression. A stranger unlocks the door and comes into the house. The dog
growls and bites the stranger. It turns out, that stranger could be Grandma coming for a visit. You can
prevent this from happening. Remember, dogs bite out of fear and not for domination.

What Can You Do, When People Come to Visit?
When people come over to visit, you can calm your aggressive dog, by coming into your
house with the guests. Then, your dog knows that you brought friends and not
strangers.
With children, you can have them play with your aggressive dog. Make sure that they
ask your permission, as an adult should supervise this. Children should not play rough with the dog, pull the
dog’s tail or tease the dog.
What about Aggressive Dogs on the Street?
If you are on the street and an aggressive stray dog approaches, then stand still. Let
the dog approach you. You need to be quiet with no eye contact. The dog should pass you and move
on.
Some aggressive dogs are fenced in and on a leash. In this case, just walk by the dog.
Do not establish eye contact or call to the dog.
Don’t tease the dog. Aggressive dogs can let loose and jump the fence. If you tease
the dog, the dog may be going after you.
What about the Law?
Most areas have laws against aggressive dogs. If a dog harms a human being, they can
be picked up and destroyed. Some areas have a “Deadly Dog List.” The aggressive dogs are
recorded, and if they get loose just one more time, then these dogs are picked up and destroyed.
For the Deadly Dog List, only the County Sheriff can put a dog on the list. A
neighbor, that says your dog is aggressive, can not put your dog on the list. This safeguard against harming
innocent dogs.
Exercise Your Dog!
If you have an aggressive dog, then give your dog some exercise. Exercise can lower
the dog’s aggression. Take your dog for a long walk around the neighborhood.
