Dog Separation Anxiety
Dogs have separation anxiety. They want to be with their masters at all times. But,
when the master has to leave, dogs want to go too. It’s tough to tell them “no.” Who knows what you may face,
when you come home.

How Do I Know That It Is Separation Anxiety?
The different signs that your dog has separation anxiety include:
1)
The dog chews your slippers or anything with your smell on it.
2)
The dog stays close to items with your smell. This includes your bed, living room
chair, bathroom towel, the laundry and the garbage.
3)
The dog poops and pees all over the place. The paper on the laundry room floor isn’t
good enough for the dog. The dog has to go in every room that you use. It’s hard not to step on
it.
4)
The dog barks continuously all day. If the dog is tied up in the
back yard, then every neighbor hears your dog all day, every day. Before long, your dog is labeled a
nuisance.
5)
When you come home, the dog gives you an over-excited greeting. The dog wants to lick
you, jump on you, and chew on your clothes. It’s a greeting fit for a king.
6)
The dog sleeps with you. The dog is committed and they know that you are, too. Dogs
can’t get close enough to you, which make for some odd sleeping positions. Just remember,
they are family.
7)
The dog digs and scratches at the door. If you have a wooden door and drywall walls,
dogs can do a lot of damage. You may need to replace that wooden door with a steel door, and you can replace
the drywall with (easier to replace) paneling or tile.
8)
The dog constantly follows you. They want to know where you are going. Especially, if
you are leaving the house or if it’s time for a walk. By following to close, your dog
doesn’t want you to leave.

How Do You Deal With Dog Separation Anxiety?
If you are leaving, make your departure low-key. Some dogs do not want a good-bye
greeting; they just want you to leave.
To help with dog separation anxiety, leave a bowl of treats that they can eat, along
with some treats that they can chew on. These treats signal to your dog that you are coming home and that you
love them. The treats also keep them busy from chewing other items.
How Do We Keep Our Dogs Healthy?
Another way to ease dog separation anxiety is to give them exercise. Take your dog to
a nearby park, field, or woods that they can run around in. Exercise helps to reduce the dog’s aggression and
anxiety.
When dealing with dog separation anxiety, make sure that the dog is healthy. A trip to
the veterinarian, may indicate why the dog is whining or barking all the time. The
veterinarian may have a way to deal with this behavior.
What Else Can I Do?
Before you depart, leave plenty of food and water. Hunger can bring on dog separation
anxiety in the form of chewing. By leaving food, treats, and water, your dog will not be hungry and will be
busy with all those chew treats.
Be aware, adopting another dog won’t help your dog separation anxiety. The dogs still
need time to get used to each other. This could work, if the puppies grew up together.
You can put the dog in a crate. This may stop the dog separation anxiety. Crates are
small areas, but they can prevent the dogs from doing any further damage to the house.
