There are two types of dogs that may require housebreaking. They include puppies and
older dogs that have just moved in. These dogs both have special needs.
How Can You Take Care of the Older Dog?
If you relocate or decide to adopt an older dog, housebreaking a dog into a new home
is necessary. The dog needs to become familiar with his new area. Give the dog a few days
to get adjusted.
As with people, changes in food and water can cause diarrhea. Your dog may be sick for
a couple of days. Check with your veterinarian and have the dog examined. See what can be done to end the
diarrhea.
Every once in a while, you may find some poop in a hideaway area. It’s been there for
several days. Don’t punish your dog, as they don’t know what they have done. Instead, just clean up the
mess.

What about Puppies?
Puppies, though, are a different story, when it comes to housebreaking a dog. Puppies
can’t control themselves, till they are about five months old. It’s hard to catch them every time, they need
to go.
You should take the puppy to the veterinarian. Have the veterinarian do a urine fecal
check. The mother dog may have passed some diseases down to the puppy. These diseases need to be taken care
of.
What Should I Note?
Puppies require close supervision. Puppies may want to go at any time, and puppies are
very curious. A close eye can keep them out of trouble.
Keep a record of the puppy’s habits. Puppies my require five to ten walks per day.
Puppies urinate after they eat, drink water, play, chew or sleep. Their body is active all day and all
night.
What is Crate Training?
Crate Training is great for puppies and helps in housebreaking a dog. The puppies are
confined to one area, so that they don’t have a chance to dirty the house. You can clean out the crate every
day.
How Should I Walk My Puppy?
When you take the puppy for a walk, make sure that the puppy eliminates during the
walk. Praise and reward the puppy for going outside. Eventually, the puppies will get used to going
outside.
If you don’t want to walk the puppy in the middle of the night, then stop giving the
puppy water after 9 PM. This will cut back on the puppy urinating in the middle of the night.
What If It’s Diarrhea?
When the dogs have diarrhea, it makes for a big mess in the house. Diarrhea can be
caused by worms or blood in the stool. Take your dogs to the veterinarian for an examination. The
veterinarian may be able to treat the diarrhea.
Feed your puppy or dog high quality pet food. Try to avoid feeding table snacks, as
they can cause diarrhea. High quality dog food will keep your dog healthy.
How Can I Make the Walks More Interesting?
Keep to a set walking schedule, when you are housebreaking a dog. The dogs will look
forward to this. They will be ready for their walk at the designated time.
Your puppies and dogs need to socialize. Have them meet new people that visit your
house. You can also take the dogs to a park with new smells and people. Animals love to socialize with people
and their pets.
