Time is Money!
Having a dog is a big responsibility. You have to invest your time,
spend some money and put some energy into it. Where time is money, you get a companion, a
waggedy tail that greets you and protection for the house. It’s all worthwhile.

It’s a Commitment!
When you adopt a dog or a puppy, you need to take time to train the animal and have
the dog adjust to your routine. Dogs love attention, so television time may also include treats for the
dog. If you need to, figure on at least three walks a day. Time is money when it comes to
caring for your dog.
A dog can live ten years or more. So having a dog is a long term
commitment. In that time period, you may have some good years and some bad
years. Through it all, your dogs will always be with you.
Time and Responsibility!
Dogs do require some of your time. You are responsible for raising a dog. You may
train the dog yourself or you may hire a dog trainer. Either way, time is money, when it comes to training
your dog.
You are also responsible to provide all of the dog’s needs. This includes food, collar
and leash, a good home environment, trips to the vet and heartworm/flea treatments. You want a happy and
healthy pet for your home.

What Changes Happen?
When you get a dog, you go through various scenarios in your dog/human
relationship. They include:
1)
Bonding – Your dog knows that you are the master. You have
a certain respect for the dog. The dog has become part of the household.
2)
Potty Training – For a puppy, potty training is a full time job. Eventually,
the puppy matures and the potty training is complete. For an older dog, they may just have
to become used to a new environment. Once the dog has adjusted, the dog knows to go
outside.
3)
House Training - includes barking, chewing, and whining.
The dog owner has to deal with all this. Time is money and the veterinarian or dog trainer can help with
these problems.
4)
Obedience - You have to spend time to train the dog. You
want the dog to be good around the house and around people. Time is money and a good dog trainer can help
you.
5)
Exercise and Attention - Dogs need to exercise and that can include dog walks
or trips to the park. They want attention and that takes time. Time is money that you devote to your
dog.
6)
Medical Care – that includes appointments with the veterinarian, flea and
heartworm medicine and occasional emergency runs to the veterinarian. Caring for a dog means keeping the dog
healthy.
7) Grooming - On some dogs, like poodles, you need to have the dog groomed. Their fir grows out
and needs to be trimmed. Time is money, as you can get a kit and do it yourself.
What Other Costs Are There?
Finally, you have the costs. You have to buy pet food and treats. You also have the
veterinarian bills and the flea and heartworm medicine. Keeping a pet is not cheap. Time
is money, since you are getting back what you put in.
What about Training?
You can go online to train a dog. There are courses and books available to help you
with the process. It’s not hard to do, but, you need to put time in your training.
